Three Reasons the MPX-E Excels in Chemical Environments

Chemical reactions are typically a bad thing when related to sensor housings and performanceAPG’s new Chemically Resistant Magnetostrictive Level Transmitter, the MPX-E Chemical, is built specifically for harsh chemical environments. While our other MPX probes, the MPX-E, MPX-R, and MPX-F, use bare 316L stainless steel for the stem, the MPX-E Chemical has a special chemical resistant coating on the stem, allowing it to perform exceptionally in situations that would, quite literally, eat a stainless steel sensor. Let’s look at a couple reasons the MPX-E Chemical works so well in such tough places.

First, the coating resists many corrosive, caustic, or acidic chemical solutions. From boric acid to hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid, to sodium hydroxide, the chemical resistant coating on the MPX-E Chemical can operate in many of the most common aggressive chemicals. Other situations that are often less than friendly for sensors, like sour crude oil, sea water, and even sewage, also pose little to no threat to the MPX-E Chemical.

APG's new MPX-E Chemical level probeSecond, much like the chemical resistant coating on the stem, the Kynar PVFD float of the MPX-E Chemical is fairly impervious to aggressive chemicals. In fact, the Kynar float probably has a longer list of “chemical meanies who can’t hurt me” than the chemical resistant coating does. So if the coating can handle your specific environment*, the Kynar float probably can, as well.

Third, the coating is repairable. For small scratches, imperfections, or blemishes, the coating can be softened, using a heat gun, and then smeared until smooth. For larger repairs, supplement patches of coating can be applied in the same manner. Either way, you don’t have to send an MPX-E Chemical probe back to the factory for coating repairs; you can do it yourself in a suitably safe space.

You asked us for a magnetostrictive level transmitter that could handle aggressive, corrosive chemical environments. The chemical resistant coating and Kynar float allow the MPX-E Chemical to go places a stainless steel probe can’t go. The easy patching for the chemical resistant coating means you don’t have to send the probe back to the factory for coating repairs. All this plus standard 4-20 mA or APG Modbus outputs make the MPX-E Chemical an easy choice for use in difficult chemical environments.
