In landfills, leachate ponds are formed when rainwater percolates through the waste and chemicals are leached into a pond beneath the landfill. The chemicals in the leachate pond are unknown and vary each day, depending on what is drained into the pond. The pressure transmitters that monitor the level of the pond must be made of sturdy materials to handle the chemical cocktail inside. In one landfill in the United States, the PT-503 submersible pressure transmitter from Automation Products Group, Inc. (APG) has proven to be the ideal solution.
There are several challenges that come with monitoring a leachate pond. Variable Chemical Composition: Leachate ponds contain a wide variety of chemicals, making it difficult to pinpoint its exact chemical makeup. Any pressure transmitter placed in such an environment must be durable enough to withstand harsh chemicals. Durability Requirements: A pressure transmitter monitoring the leachate pond needs to be durable enough to withstand contact with a variety of chemicals. The stainless steel pressure transmitters used by the landfill weren’t as durable as the application called for. Frequent Replacements: Exposure to the chemicals inside the leachate pond gave the stainless steel pressure transmitters a short lifespan of two to three months. With 60-80 transmitters in use, this led to significant maintenance and replacement costs.
To address these issues, the landfill turned to the PT-503 submersible pressure transmitter from APG. This pressure transmitter is engineered with PVDF wetted materials, giving it an excellent resilience to a variety of chemicals. The construction of the PT-503 allows it to be used in the same environment that the stainless steel pressure transmitters struggled in.
"...excellent resilience to a variety of chemicals."
The landfill was thrilled with APG’s PT-503 pressure transmitter. They were so impressed that they’ve since ordered dozens more PT-503’s from APG. With the longer lifespan of the PT-503, the customer no longer needs to order pressure transmitters so frequently, saving them time and money.
