3 Reasons Why You Need Continuous Measurement

The PG10 digital pressure gauge shows continuous measurement with it's radial bar graph that reads like a dial gauge. It can be tough to decide between continuous level measurement and point level measurement when selecting a sensor. Point level sensors can provide the user with tank level measurements at critical points. However, continuous level sensors can do more.

Here are 3 reasons why you should consider continuous level measurement:

1. Know More

By using a continuous level sensor, you can measure the material in your tank or vessel at any given time. This is advantageous in applications where real-time level data is important, such as inventory management or datalogging.

2. Do More

You can do more with signals such as 4-20mA, voltage output, or a field-bus (we use Modbus RTU all the time). These signals interface with control systems for advanced automation. For example, pump control with a point level sensor is on or off. Continuous level sensors can work with control systems to run variable speed pumps for increased efficiency and longer equipment lifecycles. For many applications, this can result in ROI in as little as one year.

3. Refine More

Continuous level sensors, at least at APG, often feature microprocessors for processing data. Adding the processor allows software installation on the sensor itself for improved programming, signal conditioning, custom units of measure, and more. Having a programmable interface or software package lets you adjust the sensor’s performance to your needs.

There is certainly a place in the world for point level sensors, especially when budget is the primary concern. However, they come with limitations that may be costing you precious time and money. Consider a continuous level measurement to explore how you can improve your processes and streamline operations.
